La Mexican Life of a Cement Business Owner/ La Vida mexicana del dueño de Negocio de Materiales

     Mario is fifty years old and lives in Guadalajara.  He has a business that sells materials to build houses.  His business is on the outskirts of town, but he gets a lot of business because there has been new buildings being built closeby.   He feels very successful and happy.  He has been married for twenty years and has three children that are now in high school.  He has twin girls that will be attending college the following year in Monterrey. 

     Mario employs ten people to help him work his business.  He usually starts his day at seven in the morning by eating breakfast with his wife.  He drives to work in his new Audi convertible.  He usually is in the office from 9am until lunchtime.  He always eats lunch with his wife in their house.  Afterwards, he doesn´t go back to his shop until it is time for him to lock up at 7pm.  He has his workers take care of business while he enjoys playing racquetball at the private sports club that he has been a member of since 1999.

     Mario was not formally educated, but he is a very intelligent man.  He enjoys engaging in conversations with aristocrats at the sports club about politics, literature and financial matters.  He and his wife host prestigious dinner parties in their mansion on the weekends.

La Vida Mexicana de un Zapatero/ The Mexican Life of a Shoe Repairman

Jose Luis tiene trienta y siete años y vive con su esposa, sus tres niños y su mama y papa.  El es el más joven de cinco hermanos.  Se casó con su novia cuando cumplió diecinueve años.  Nunca terminó la secundaria; más bien empezó un negocio de reparación de zapatos a la edad joven de quince.

Jose Luis solía ir al distrito de negocios en la ciudad y ponía su estante de bolear zapatos.  Sus clientes eran la mayoría políticos quienes pasaban en camino a juntas de gobierno.  Ganaba más ó menos 150 pesos diarios, gastando 50 de eso en su transporte, comida y bebidas.

Su esposa, Liliana, conoció a Jose Luis en la iglesia católica de la comunidad.  Su familia es muy religiosa y Jose Luis seguido va a misa entre semana.  Liliana sabía que quiso casarse con él, y después de solo un año de salir, se casaron en su iglesia.  Ellos celebraron con todo su familia y vecinos en las calles para muchos días.  Liliana pronto se embarazó con su primer hijo, quien llamó Cristian.  Jose Luis decidió mover su negocio de zapatos adentro su casa pequeña para no tener que viajar a la ciudad todos los días.  Su cuarto de sala es ahora dedicada a su negocio, donde pasa su tiempo reparando zapatos.  Gana casi lo mismo, y dice que es más feliz estar juntos con sus seres amados.

The Mexican Life of a Shoe Repairman/ La Vida Mexicana de un Zapatero

     Jose Luis is 37 years old and lives with his wife, their three children and his mother and father.  He is the youngest of five brothers.  He got married to his girlfriend when he was nineteen.  He never completed middle school, rather he started his shoe repair business at the early age of fifteen. 

     Jose Luis used to go into the business district of the city and set up a shoe shining booth.  His clientele were mostly politics who passed by on their way to government meetings.  He earned roughly 150 pesos a day, spending 50 of that on his transportation, food and drinks. 

     His wife, Liliana, met Jose Luis at the local Catholic church.  His family is very religious and Jose Luis often attends mass throughout the week.  Liliana knew she wanted to marry him, and after only one year of dating, they got married at their church.  They celebrated with all of their family and neighbors in the streets for many days.  Liliana was soon pregnant with their first son, whom they named Cristian.  Jose Luis decided to move his shoe business to their small house so he didn´t have to travel into the city everyday.  Their front room is now dedicated to his business, where he spends his time repairing shoes.  He makes about the same wage, and he says that he feels much happier being close to his loved ones.

La Vida de Un Poeta/ Life of a Poet

     Travis siempre ha sido un amante de los libros.  Vio a su padre, quien es un profesor de inglés, cuando trabajó sin parar en escribir una novela en su oficina de casa y aspiró a ser como él.  Estudió literatura creativa en Naropa University en Colorado y se graduó con un diploma de maestría.  Desafortunamente, Travis no encontró trabajo pronto después de graduarse y usó su tiempo libre para emborracharse más que escribir poemas.

     A la edad joven de 25, Travis ya había sido arrestado dos veces por manejar intoxicado.  Además, peleó con su novia y la golpeó, entonces Travis fue acusado de violencia doméstica y fue a la cárcel por seis meses.  Durante su estancia en la prisión, el fue diagnosticado con depresión clínica.  Empezó a tomar medicamento y va a una terapeuta seguido.

     Ahora Travis tiene 32 años y se siente estable relativamente.  Cuando recuerda sus 20s, está sorprendido que sobrevivió.  Confiesa que era imprudente con su vida y las de otros.  Habla regularmente en las noches de poesía sobre sus experiencias…a veces sus poemas hacen reír la gente por sus comportamientos idiotas mientras otros explican la realidad abrupta del daño que hizo a otros.

    Travis no tiene planes para su futuro; sino, vive un dia a la vez.  Ha estado sobrio tres años ya.

Life as a Poet/ La Vida de un Poeta

     Travis has always been a bookworm.  He watched his father, who is an English professor, as he worked endlessly on writing a novel in his home office and aspired to be just like him.  He studied Creative Writing at Naropa University in Colorado and graduated with a Masters degree.  Unfortunately, Travis did not find work immediately after graduation and used his free time getting drunk rather than writing poems.

     At the young age of 25, Travis already had been arrested two times for drinking and driving.  In addition, he got in a fight with his girlfriend that became physical, so Travis was charged with domestic violence and sent to jail for six months.  During his stay in prison, he was diagnosed with clinical depression.   He began taking antidepressant medication and goes to a therapist regularly.   

     Travis is now 32 years old and feels relatively stable.  When he looks back on his 20s, he is amazed that he even survived.  He admits to being reckless with his life and others.  He regularly speaks at poetry nights about his experiences…sometimes his poems make the crowd laugh at his idiotesque behaviors while others describe the harsh reality of the harm he caused others. 

     Travis has no plans for his future; rather, he lives one day at a time.  He has been living sober for three years now.

La Vida de un Vendedor en una tienda de música/ Life of a Music Store Salesperson

     Craig tiene trienta y cinco años y dice que está entrando en una crisis de media vida.   Últimamente ha soñado sobre renunciar a su trabajo como un trabajador en una tienda de música para hacerse un músico de tiempo completo.  Empezó a trabajar en la tienda de música cuando todavía estaba en la universidad.  Cuando apenas inició, le encantó su trabajo porque enseño clases de guitara a jóvenes mientras ganaba suficiente dinero para festejar y pagar la renta.  Estaba estudiando músico los primeros dos años, pero decidió terminar su carrera en artes liberales porque, en esos tiempos, fue una carrera más fácil. 

     Una vez que se graduó de la universidad, nunca aplicó a trabajos nuevos para utilizar su diploma.  Siguió trabajando en la tienda de música porque estaba cómodo con su vida.  Tiene muchos amigos quienes son músicos también y todos los miércoles se juntan en un bar local a tocar.  Nunca pierde una sesión de música los miércoles, y también toca en una banda alternativa llamada Reality Work los sábados en el bar de su hermano para cerveza y comida gratis. 

     Craig está saliendo con varias chicas, pero nada en serio.  Dice que no quiere comprometerse a una relación porque solo puede mantenerse a si mismo.  Disfruta salir con mujeres pero sabe que cada año, es más difícil para él a conocer mujeres solteras disponibles.  El es un hombre atractivo y se queda en forma por caminar a su trabajo, pero últimamente solo conoce mujeres con muchos hijos (los cuales no le interesan) ó mujeres interesadas en una compromiso de tiempo largo.  Piensa que parte del problema es que pierde mucho de su día en la tienda. 

     Su hermano apoya la idea de Craig a hacerse músico de tiempo completo porque cree que Craig es suficiente bueno como músico a ser famoso.  Se puso de acuerdo a dejar Craig a tocar en su bar tres veces la semana hasta que busca otros arreglos.  Craig ahora está buscando otros contratos y quiere hacer tour con Reality Work durante los meses del verano.  No puede esperar hasta que llegar a la tienda de música mañana y dar el aviso de las dos semanas previas a renunciar.

Life of a Music Store Salesperson/ La Vida de

     Craig is thirty five years old and claims to be going through a midlife crisis.  Lately, he has been dreaming about quitting his job as a music store salesperson and becoming a fulltime musician.  He started to work at the music store when he was still in college.  When he first started, he really enjoyed his job because he taught young children guitar lessons while earning enough money to party and pay for rent.  He was studying music for the first two years at the university, but he decided to complete a degree in liberal arts because, at the time, it was an easier degree.

     Once he graduated from college, he never applied to any new jobs to use his degree.  He continued to work at the music store because he was comfortable with his life.  He has a lot of friends who are also musicians and every wednesday they meet up at a local bar and jam together.  He never misses a Wednesday jam session, and he also plays in a alternative band called Reality Work on Saturdays at his brother´s bar for free beer and food.  

     Craig is dating several girls, but nothing serious.  He claims that he doesn´t want to commit to a relationship because he can only support himself.  He enjoys going out with ladies but knows that every year, it gets harder and harder for him to meet available single women.  He is an attractive man and stays in shape by walking to work, but lately he has only met women that have a lot of children (which does not interest him) or women who are looking for a longterm commitment.  He thinks part of the problem is that he spends most of his day at the store.

     His brother supports Craig´s idea about becoming a fulltime musician because he thinks Craig is good enough to be famous.  He agreed to let Craig play at his bar 3x per week until he finds other gigs.  Craig is now on the search for gig contracts and wants to tour with Reality Work during the summer months.  He can´t wait until he goes into the music store tomorrow and put in his two week notice to quit.

La Vida de una ama de casa/ Life of a housewife

Michelle empieza su día a las siete de la mañana. Debe despertar a sus tres hijos y ayudarles a alistarse para la escuela. Sus hijos están inscritos en la escuela pública primaria a tres cuadras de su casa. Hace un desayuno rápido que suele consistir de cereal y jugo. Camina con ellos a la escuela y luego va al gimnasio a hacer ejercicio por una hora. Su esposo suele acompáñarla al gimnasio antes de ir a su despacho. El es un abogado en un despacho prestigioso en Columbus, Ohio. Michelle es una ama de casa, aunque se conocieron mientras que estudiaron en la universidad de leyes de Virginia Occidental. Michelle nunca terminó a sus estudios porque decidió que prefiere criar a sus hijos y atender a la casa.

Michelle pasa como una hora en su laptop todos los días después del gimnasio. Empezó un blog sobre actividades comunitarias y ella es muy activa en los proyectos comunitarios. Recientemente empezó un proyecto de limpieza en su vecindad y parques cercanos. Hasta el momento, tiene 25 miembros. Michelle espera sus hijos afuera la escuela a las 3:30pm. Todos caminan a la casa y luego ella empieza a cocinar la cena. Michelle disfruta cocinando platos internacionales y gourmet. Aunque sus hijos no agradecen el tiempo y esfuerzo que hace en cocinar, su esposo lo hace. El dice que Michelle ganó a su corazón la primera vez que probó su comida. Se fascinó por todos los estilos diferentes que hace, y siempre se emociona de comer la cena juntos como una familia.

En las tardes, limpia la casa un poco y pasa tiempo con su esposo mientras que los niños juegan en la sala ó afuera. A ella le gusta escuchar sobre su día de trabajo porque todavía está interesada en muchos aspectos de ser abogado. Se siente afortunada que su esposo puede apoyarla a ella y a sus hijos para que tenga tiempo de ser mama. Sabe que en la economía de hoy, muchas mujeres están forzadas a entrar el mercado laboral. Dice que sus hijos gustan que ella está en la casa con ellos, y ella ama ser gran parte de sus vidas.

Life of a Housewife/La Vida de una ama de casa

      Michelle starts her day at 7 in the morning.  She must wake up her three kids and help them get ready for school.  Her children are all enrolled in the public elementary school three blocks from their house.  She fixes a quick breakfast that usually consists of cereal and juice.  She walks them to the school and then goes to the gym to workout for an hour.  Her husband usually joins her at the gym before heading to his law firm.  He is a lawyer at a prestigious law firm in Columbus, Ohio.  Michelle is a housewife, though they met while they were both studying at West Virginia Law School.  Michelle never finished her studies because she decided that she would rather raise their children and tend to their house.

     Michelle spends about an hour on her laptop everyday after the gym.  She started a blog about community building and she is very active in many community projects.  She recently began a cleanup project in her neighborhood and nearby parks.  She holds meetings regularly with other people interested in community projects.  So far, they have 25 members.

      Michelle waits for her children outside of their school at 3:30pm.  They all walk home and then she begins to cook dinner.  Michelle enjoys cooking international and gourmet meals.  Although her children don´t appreciate the time and effort she puts in to cooking, her husband does.  He claims that Michelle won his heart when he first tried her cooking.  He was fascinated by all of the different styles of foods she makes, and always looks forward to eating dinner together as a family.

     In the evenings, she cleans the house a bit and then spends time with her husband while their children play in the living room or outside.  She likes to hear about his day at work because she is still interested in many aspects of being a lawyer.  She feels very fortunate that her husband is able to support her and their children so she has time to be a mom.  Michelle knows that in today´s economy, many women are forced to enter the workforce.  She says that her kids like that she is at home with them, and she loves being so much part of their lives.

La Vida de un Banquero/ The Life of a Banker

     Daniel ha estado trabajando en el banco más grande en Montgomery, Alabama desde 1980. Empezó a trabajar allá cuando cumplió solo veinticinco años y recién salido de la universidad. Dice que él es uno de las pocas personas que conoce que nunca ha tenido que escribir un currículo porque ha tenido el mismo trabajo toda su vida. Daniel está planeando jubilarse cuando cumpla sesenta, así solo tiene un par de años más en el banco.

     Daniel ha visto muchos cambios entre los veinticinco años trabajando como un banquero, unos de lo más grandes son los cajeros ATM. Daniel recuerda un tiempo cuando fue común para la gente visitar el banco a depositar y sacar dinero como una rutina semanal. El ha podido desarrollar relaciones muy personales con sus clientes. Se dio cuenta que esta manera ha desaparecido porque los clientes no necesitan ir al banco a completar ni uno de esos trámites. Prefieren usar los cajeros ATM ó drive-thrus.

     Aparte de banco, Daniel tiene un gusto en coleccionar obras. Su ahora difunta esposa  y el solían atender las subastas de arte y ofrecer por sus obras favoritas. Daniel sigue yendo a las subastas de arte con su hija mayor. Piensa que una vez que se jubile puede convertir su oficina en la casa en un estudio de arte para crear sus propias obras maestras.
