Un Día en la Vida de una Maestra de inglés en Mexico/A Day in the Life of an English Teacher in Mexico

     Corey vive en Monterrey, México, aunque nació en Canada. Decidió a mudarse a México después de graduarse de la universidad para enseñar inglés. Ella  envió solicitudes a cinco ó seis diferentes escuelas alrededor de México y fue aceptada en Monterrey. Ella está más o menos contenta con su decisión de mudarse a México pero ha tomado algo de tiempo para ajustarse a la nueva cultura.

     Por ejemplo, Corey vive en un departamento pequeño con otra maestra de inglés de Irlanda. Se dio cuenta que mucha gente de su edad sigue viviendo con sus padres. También fue sorprendida al aprender que tan poco les pagan a los maestros. Trabaja cuarenta horas cada semana dando clases, pero nunca tiene suficiente dinero para pagar la comida, la renta y salir con sus amigos.  Afortunadamente, ahorró dinero antes de dejar Canada para ayudar en suplir su sueldo. Una cosa que no la sorprendió es el punto de vista muy estereotípico sobre homosexuales en México. Ha dicho a muy poca gente que ella es lesbiana para evitar platicas incomodas con anti-gays.

     A Corey le gusta mucho conocer gente de diferentes partes del mundo. Se siente cómoda hablando español gran parte del día, pero también le gusta pasar tiempo con la comunidad de anglohablantes en Monterrey. Tiene una novia quien también trabaja como maestra de inglés en la misma escuela. Sueñan con enseñar inglés en muchos países juntos. Corey quiere visitar Guatemala y Argentina en los próximos años.

A Day in the Life of an English Teacher in Mexico/ Un Día en La Vida de una Maestra de íngles en Mexico

     Corey lives in Monterrey, Mexico, though  she was born in Canada.  She decided to move to Mexico after graduating from college to teach English.  She applied to five or six different schools around Mexico and was accepted in Monterrey.  She is fairly happy with her decision to move to Mexico but it has taken some time to adjust to the new culture.

     For example, Corey lives in a small apartment with another ESL teacher from Ireland.  She has noticed that many people her age continue to live with their parents.  She was also surprised to learn how little teachers get paid.  She works forty hours each week teaching classes, but she never has enough money to pay for food, rent and go out with her friends.  Luckily, she saved money before leaving Canada to help supplement her income.  One thing that didn´t surprise her is the stereotypical viewpoint of gays in Mexico.  She has told very few people that she is a lesbian to avoid uncomfortable discussions with anti-gay Mexicans.

      Corey really enjoys meeting new people from different parts of the world.  She feels comfortable speaking in Spanish most of the day, but she also likes spending time with the English speaking community in Monterrey.  She has a girlfriend who also works as a English teacher at the same school.  They dream about teaching English in many different countries together.  Corey wants to visit Guatemala and Argentina in the next five years.

Un Día en La Vida Mexicana de Un Vendedor de Agua/A Day in the Life of a Water Supplier

     Eric tiene cuarenta años.  Vive en un pueblo chico con sus padres.  Tiene un niño, Jacob, que también vive en la casa de los papas de Eric.  Nunca se casó con la mama de Jacob.  Eric vende garrafones de agua a los pueblos cercanos en su camioneta. 

     Todos los días, Eric se despierta temprano y carga todos los garrafones en su camioneta.  Suele comer un desayuno grande antes de irse.  A veces su primo le acompaña en el día para manejar, pero la mayoría del tiempo va solo.  Eric vive cerca de muchos pueblos chiquitos que dependen de agua embotellada para beber.  Maneja alrededor cada vecindad y toca una canción afuera las casas que anuncia su agua en venta.  Muchos de sus clientes conocen su camioneta y esperan afuera de sus casas y le chiflan para que se pare cuando pasa entre su vecindad. 

     Eric vende más o menos cincuenta botellas grandes todos los días.  En adición a la ruta de agua, también tiene una tiendita adentro la casa de sus padres que venden refrescos y papas.  Su mama atienda la casa mientras que Eric no está en la casa.  Durante los fines de semanas,  Eric disfruta ir a los campos de futbol a mirar los torneos locales con sus amigos.  Aunque ya no juega, es un enorme fan de futbol.  Su hijo juega futbol con sus compañeros y Eric dice que es un tremendo atleta.  Eric espera que Jacob siga practicando todos los días así para que él pueda entrar en el equipo nacional de futbol.  Le gustaría ver su hijo representar a México en los olímpicos.

A Day in the Mexican Life of a Water Supplier/Un Día en la Vida de un Vendedor de Agua

       Eric is forty years old.  He lives in a small town with his parents.  He has one child, Jacob, that also lives in his parent´s house after Eric.  He never married Jacob´s mother.  Eric sells garaphones of water to neighboring towns in his pickup truck.

     Everyday, Eric wakes up early and loads all of the garaphones of water into his truck.  He typically eats a big breakfast before leaving.  Sometimes his cousin joins him for the day to drive around, but most of the time he goes by himself.  Eric lives close to many small towns that depend on bottled water to drink.  He drives around each neighborhood and plays a jingle that announces his water for sale.  Most of his clients also recognize his truck and wait outside of their houses and whistles him to stop when he passes through their neighborhood.

     Eric sells roughly 50 big bottles of water everyday.  In addition to his water route, he also has a small store inside his parent´s house that sells pops and potato chips.  His mom attends to the store when Eric is not in the house.  During the weekends, Eric enjoys going to the soccer fields to watch local tournaments with his friends.    Although he doesn´t play anymore, he is a huge fan of soccer.  His son plays soccer with his classmates and Eric says that he is quite the athlete.  Eric hopes that Jacob continues to practice everyday so that he can join the national soccer team.  He would love to see his son represent Mexico in the Olympics.

Un Día en la Vida Mexicana de un alumno de la Universidad/ A Day in the Mexican Life of a University Student

     Joel es de Chihuahua pero cuando cumplió dieciocho años, se mudó a Guanajuato a estudiar arquitectura en la Universidad de Guanajuato.  Sus papas le mandaron a vivir con una familia que da comida y un cuarto en su casa a cambio de un sueldo mensual.  Jorge fue en un paseo de camión que duró dieciocho horas a Guanajuato con solo dos mochilas llenas de ropa, libros, laptop y un iphone. Cuando llegó, se sorprendió a ver un pueblo tan hermoso.  Caminó alrededor de la ciudad durante los primeros días con su iphone tomando fotos y mandándolas a su familia.

     Joel se desempeñó muy bien durante su primer semestre en la universidad.  Se lleva muy bien con sus compañeros y disfrutó vivir con la nueva familia.  Desafortunamente en Octubre, Joel rompió su tobillo mientras patinaba y tuvo que ir inmediatamente al hospital.  Usó muletas por dos meses antes de que su tobillo sanara completamente.

     Ya que no podía estar activo por un par de meses, pasó muchas tardes en un café local.  Empezó a convivir con un extranjero de Alemania quien está estudiando fotografía en la universidad.  Joel y Karl llegaron a ser buenos amigos, así que Joel decidió invitar a Karl a pasar sus vacaciones en su casa en Chihuahua.

     Joel está disfrutando todas las nuevas cosas que están pasando en su vida.  Ha decidido que después de graduarse de la universidad, pasará un año viajando alrededor de México.  Encontró un sitio divertido llamado couchsurfing que ayuda en encontrar gente para quedarse en su casa un tiempecito.   ¡Joel cree que esta será una gran aventura!

A Day in the Mexican Life of a University student/ Un Día en la Vida Mexicana de un alumno de la Universidad

     Joel is from Chihuahua but when he turned eighteen years old, he moved to Guanajuato to study architecture at the University of Guanajuato.  His parents sent him to live with a family that provides food and a room in their house in exchange for a monthly fee.   Jorge went on an 18 hour bus ride to Guanajuato with only two duffle bags full of clothes, books, laptop and an iphone.  When he arrived, he was surprised to see such a beautiful town.  He walked around the city during the first few days with his iphone taking pictures and sending them to his family.

     Joel did really well during his first semester in the university.  He got along really well with his classmates and enjoyed living with the new family.  Unfortunately in October, Joel broke his ankle while skateboarding and had to go immediately to the hospital.  He used crutched for two months before his ankle healed completely.

    Because he wasn´t able to be active for a couple of months, he spent most evenings in a local café.  He started to hang out with a foreigner from Germany who was studying photography at the university.  Joel and Karl became very good friends, so Joel decided to invite Karl to spend their holiday vacations at his house in Chihuahua.

     Joel is enjoying all of the new things that are happening in his life.  He has decided that after he graduates from college, he will spend one year traveling around Mexico.  He has found a fun website called couchsurfing that helps people meet and stay at their house for a short period of time.  Joel thinks this would be quite an adventure!

Un Día en la vida Mexicana de una enfermera de la Clinica/A Day in the Mexican Life of a Clinic Nurse

Francisca es muy bonita. Tiene pelo negro y largo que recoge en una liga y ojos grandes y cafés. Tiene un carácter muy tranquilo, y por eso es fácil para ella trabajar en la clínica pequeña de su pueblo como enfermera. Francisca siempre supo que quiso ayudar los enfermos porque creció cuidando a su hermano menor enfermo. Su hermano menor murió a la edad de seis después de una batalla de tres años con leucemia. Francisca estaba destrozada por su muerte, y por muchos años, se quedó en su cuarto leyendo libros solita.

     Durante la prepa, conoció a Carlos. Ellos eran una pareja improbable por que el es atlético mientras que ella es buena con los estudios. Sin embargo, ellos estuvieron juntos todos los años de la prepa. Se embarazó en el último año de la prepa. Carlos se puso nervioso porque no hubiera podido apoyar una familia, así que se mudó a los Estados Unidos donde sigue trabajando hoy. De vez en cuando está en contacto con Francisco, pero solo para mandar dinero para su hijo Nicolas.

     Fran se queda en la casa de sus padres y recibe mucho apoyo de ellos. No estaban emocionados sobre su embarazo sin casarse pero ellos aman a Nicolas más de lo que se puede explicar con palabras. Desafortunamente, Nicolas también nació con unos problemas de salud. Sufre de asma crónica. El no puede jugar como muchos niños porque tiene experiencias de cortes de respiración. En lugar, Nicolas está formándose como un amante de libros como su madre. Después de que regresa de la clínica, pasan la tarde leyendo libros en el sofá juntos.

     Francisca va a cumplir treinta años este mes y se siente muy bien sobre su vida. Ha tenido experiencias de corazón roto muchas veces a través de su vida, pero ha usado esas experiencias para alcanzar y ayudar a otros. Su meta es traer alegría en las vidas de la gente por cuidarles en la clínica.

A Mexican Day in the Life of a Clinic Nurse/ Un Día Mexicana en la vida de una enfermera de la clinica

      Francisca is very beautiful.  She has long black hair that she ties back in a ponytail and big brown eyes.   She has a very calming personality, so it is easy for her to work in the small clinic in her town as a nurse.  Fransisca always knew that she wanted to help sick people because she grew up taking care of her sick younger brother.  Her younger brother died at the age of six after a three year battle with leukemia.  Francisca was devastated from his death, and for many years, she stayed in her room reading books by herself. 

     During high school, she met Carlos.  They were a very unlikely couple because he is an athlete while she is a bookworm.  Nonetheless, they were a couple all through high school.  She became pregnant her senior year of high school.  Carlos got nervous because he would not be able to support a family, so he moved to the United States where he still works today.  He occasionally keeps in touch with Francisca, but only to send money for their child Nicolas.

     Fran stays in her parents´ house and gets a lot of support from her parents.  They were not thrilled about her becoming pregnant without getting married, but they love Nicolas more than words can describe.  Unfortunately, Nicolas was also born with mild health problems.  He suffers from cronic asthma.  He is not able to play outside like most children because he experiences shortness of breath.  Instead, Nicolas is also turning into a bookworm like his mother.  After she returns home from the clinic, they spend the evening reading books on the sofa together.

   Francisca will turn thirty this month and feels very good about her life.  She has experienced heartache many times throughout her life, but she has used these experiences to reach out and help others.  Her goal is to bring joy into people´s lives by nurturing them in the clinic.

La Vida Mexicana de una Profesora de Bajo/ The Mexican Life of a Bass Guitar Musician

     Maribel es de D.F.  Se considera una mujer mexicana no tradicional, ya que trabaja y viaja como una música profesional.  Ya desde joven, la gente se dio cuenta de su talento en el bajo y Maribel disfrutó la atención especial que recibió al tocar para ellos.  Se fue a la universidad y estudió música e hizo un tour con un grupo de jazz por tres años alrededor de Mexico y a otros países en Sudamérica. 

     La mama de Maribel enfermó y ella necesitaba que Maribel le ayudara en la casa.  Maribel decidió regresar a la casa con su mama y buscar un trabajo cerca.  Fue contratada para impartir clases en el departamento de música en la UNAM.  Maribel está contenta de ser una profesora pero sigue preocupada sobre la condición de su mama. 

     De vez en cuando Maribel sale usando un servicio de citas por Internet .  Dice que las citas en linea han sido muy divertidas para ella porque puede conocer una amplia variedad de hombres.  Está buscando alguien con una mente abierta, cómico y también tenga pasión por la música.  Aunque ella toma con sus amigos, no le gustan los hombres que toman en exceso. En adición a online dating, usa Facebook muy seguido.  A veces tiene problemas para dormir en la noche, así le gusta a mirar fotos en Facebook de sus amigos.  Dice que es su placer culpable.

The Mexican Life of a Bass Guitar Professor/La Vida Mexicana de una profesora de bajo

     Maribel is from Mexico City.  She considers herself to be a nontraditional Mexican woman, as she works and travels as a musician.  Even at a young age, people noticed her talent on the bass guitar and Maribel enjoyed the special attention she received from performing for people.  She went to college and studied music and toured with a jazz band for three years around Mexico and into other countries in South America. 

     Maribel´s mother became ill and she needed Maribel to help her in the house.  Maribel decided to move back home with her mother and look for a job closeby.  She was hired to teach in the Music Department at the UNAM.   Maribel was happy to be a professor, but she remained worried about her mother´s condition.

     Maribel occasionally dates using an Internet dating service.  She says that online dating has been a lot of fun for her because she gets to meet a wide variety of men.  She is looking for someone who is open minded, funny and also is passionate about music.  Though she is a social drinker, she does not like men who drink too much.   In addition to online dating, she also uses Facebook often.  Sometimes she has problems sleeping at night, so she likes to look at pictures on Facebook of her friends.  She calls it her guilty pleasure.
